My friends Josh and Meredith have a beautiful farm in upstate New York. I went up there with my girlfriend and some friends in December of 2002. We all went out to dinner, hung out, played with back hoes, ATV's and radio controlled cars and planes.

We almost didn't fly the plane. There were a few factors at play, including not having all the right equipment (my fault), it being too windy or late in the day, not having a smooth runway and my being scared of crashing.

On the last day there, Josh asked me if I was going to try and fly the plane. I hesitated. I didn't think we had enough time to get everything set up. Plus it was pretty windy. Josh balked at all of my concerns and sent our friend Adam up to the flatest field with a riding mower to prepare a runway, and told me he would help get the plane set up.

When I got to the field, we saw that Adam had done an amazing job getting the field ready, and there was no excuse but to fly. I was worried about crashing Josh's plane and about the wind, but we got it up in the air anyway.
