RupitWhile visiting the Monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres, Lluis Poblet, the caretaker of the space told us about a nearby town called Rupit that he said we needed to visit. He said that it was not very well known outside of the area and a real jewel. We almost didn't make the trip, though. It was a total of 2 hours out of our way, and we were in danger of losing our hotel reservation in Girona, our next stop. After a bit of indecision, we called the hotel, asked them to hold our reservation and made our way through the countryside to Rupit. The road takes you through the mountains, and by necessity meanders back and forth for miles. I'm not prone to car sickness, but the road to Rupit came close to inducing nausea. I think you'll agree, after seeing the pictures, that it was well worth the trip. The town was founded in the 14th century and further construction took place in the 16th and 17th centuries. If you ever get a chance to visit, you definitely should. It's located about 2-2.5 hours north of Barcelona. |
