Sri Lanta
We wanted to end our vacation on the beach. We knew that we would be running around seeing as much as possible during the preceeding two weeks and wanted to finish our trip by relaxing in the sun, doing nothing. The Sri Lanta resort provided just such an opportunity. The place was beautifully designed and was clearly a couple of steps up from the surrounding resorts and hotels. You can definitely stay in Thailand for very little if you chose to. Our hotel in Krabi was $17 a night--clean and comfortable. At approximately $100 a night, the Sri Lanta was definitely a splurge, by Thai standards, but still much less than you would expect to pay for a comparable resort elsewhere. Service was always well-meaning, if not a little confused at times. The managers all speak very good English and could help with questions. The rest of the staff, very eager to help, sometimes was unable to do so. I remember asking a waiter some question. While I asked he smiled and listened intently, leaning in to get every word. When I stopped talking he just smiled at me. I then asked "Do you understand?", to which he just shook his head from side to side. :-) I mention that story only to illustrate the willingness of the staff to help. Most everyone's English was better than my hastily learned Thai.
